When you’re a parent, one of your main goals in life is to protect your children. You would work tirelessly to make sure your children are safe and out of harm’s way.

When Josie was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on October 19, 2012 we had no idea how to protect her from this chronic, life-threatening disease. We were sad, scared, and lost.

About a week after her diagnosis, we were still busy researching this disease and its long term effects on our then 3-year-old daughter. This is when we came across the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation website. We immediately knew that our calling was to get involved and be a part of raising money for a cure. Within a month of her diagnosis we were already in the beginning stages of planning this 5K run/walk.

We knew from the beginning that we wanted to bring our family, friends, co-workers, and community together to raise money for these causes. Knowing that Camp Speers YMCA already had an established reputation for working with families and children, their establishment was the obvious choice for the location of the Taking Our Shot at Inspiring Hope 5K. Cherie Hammond and her wonderful staff welcomed us with open arms.

After finding the location, the minor details began to fall into place and donations began to arrive. We had no idea the emotions that would be attached with these thoughtful gestures. On multiple occasions, the two of us were overwhelmed with the idea that so many people cared not only about Josie but also about diabetes research. This part of the process was truly a humbling experience.

Our family cannot thank you all enough for your time, energy, and efforts that made this day so special. We will never, ever give up the fight to end this ugly disease. Please continue to keep us, Josie, and all of the other people affected by T1D in your prayers. Without your efforts, this amazing event would have never happened.
